Der Bau des Schiffes begann 1795 in der Hartt Schiffswerft in Boston nach den Plänen von Joshua Humphrey aus Philadelphia. Die Fertigstellung und der Stapellauf der CONSTITUTION erfolgte im Oktober 1797.

Sie war mit 44 Kanonen bewaffnet, darunter 30 langläufige 24-Pfünder.

Im Krieg zwischen England und Frankreich (1812-1814) führte die CONSTITUTION einen erfolgreichen Einsatz gegen die Fregatten GUERRIERE (mit 38 Kanonen) und JAVA. Ihre letzte Kriegsfahrt fand im Februar 1815 statt.

Am 13 Mai 1821 wurde die CONSTITUTION zum Flaggschiff des Mittelmeer Geschwaders. Im Juli 1828 wurde sie wegen Wartungsarbeiten vorläufig außer Dienst genommen. Dann jedoch beschloss die Regierung ihre Verschrottung. Das Gedicht "Old Ironsides" von Oliver W. Holmes führte allerdings erfolgreich zur Erhaltung der Fregatte.

Zwischen 1833-1834 wurde sie generalüberholt und segelte dann im Jahre 1848 ins Mittelmeer, wo sie von Papst Pius IX besucht wurde. Dadurch wurde er zum ersten Papst, der einen Fuß auf amerikanisches Territorium gesetzt hatte.

In den Jahren 1855 bis 1931 wurde das Schiff dreimal fast vollständig umgebaut - zu einem Gesamtpreis von rund 200.000 Dollar.

Am 2. Juli 1931, nach ihrem letzten Umbau, begann sie eine dreijährige Reise unter Schlepptau, während derer sie 90 amerikanische Häfen anlief und 4.614.792 Besucher an Bord hatte. Seit 1934 liegt die CONSTITUTION im Hafen von Boston vor Anker. Sie ist das Flaggschiff des Kommandanten des ersten Naval Districts und somit das älteste Kriegsschiff der Welt, das noch im aktiven Dienst steht. Einmal im Jahr wird die Fregatte im Hafen von Boston im Rahmen einer Zeremonie gedreht, um die Wetterseite wechseln und zu verhindern dass eine Seite ständig schlechtem Wetter ausgesetzt ist.

In the war between England and France (1812-1814) the CONSTITUTION led a successful engagement against the frigates GUERRIERE (with 38 cannons) and JAVA. Her last wartime voyage was in February 1815.

On 13th of May 1821 the CONSTITUTION became the flagship of the Mediterranean Squadron. In July 1828 she was due to be taken provisionally out of service and the government then decided that she should be scrapped. However, the poem "Old Ironsides" by Oliver W. Holmes successfully made the case for the frigate's preservation.

Between 1833 and 1834 she was given a major overhaul and in 1848 sailed to the Mediterranean Sea where she was visited by Pope Pius IX. He thus became the first pope ever to set foot on the American territory.

During the years 1855 to 1931 the ship was almost completely rebuilt on three occasions at a total cost of around 200,000 dollars.

On 2nd July 1931, after her last refurbishment, she began a three year voyage under tow, during which she called at 90 American ports and received 4,614,792 visitors on board. Since 1934 the CONSTITUTION has been moored in the port of Boston. She is the flagship of the Commander of the First Naval District and therefore the oldest warship still in active service anywhere in the world. Once a year the frigate is turned around in Boston harbour with appropriate ceremony in order to change the weather side and avoid its constant exposition to bad weather.

De 1833 à 1834, la frégate subit une révision approfondie. En 1848 elle fit uns croisière en Méditérannée au cours de laquelle le pape Pie IX visita le navire. Il était ainsi le premier pape à mettre pied sur le sol américain.

Entre 1855 et 1931 le navire fut presque entièrement renové trois fois. Ces travaux coûtèrent la somme totale d'environ 200.000 dollars.

Une fois les derniers travaux dc rénovation terminés, le navire commença le 2 juillet 1931 un voyage qui devait durer 3 ans et pendant lequel il fut remorqué dans 90 ports américains. Pendant ce voyage, 4,614,792 visiteurs montèrent à bord. Le CONSTITUTION se trouve depuis 1934 dans le port de Boston. Il est le navire amiral du rammandant du "First Naval District" et, ainsi, le plus ancien navire de guerre actif du monde. Une fois par an, on retourne la frégate dans le port de Boston pour changer le côté exposé aux intempéries; cela donne lieu à une cérémonie.
