The lugger was a type of ship often used by the French corsairs during the Revolution and the Empire. Its origin must be British. This vessel is rigged as a three-masted coasting-vessel but at larger scale with a very long bowsprit, several fore topsails and some topgallant sails.

lt has been built by the Denys de Dunkerque according to a plan dated 1775 and was launched in 1776.

"Le Coureur's" life has been brief as it was captured by the English on June 17th 1778 during a famous battle between the frigate "La Belle Poule" and "Arethusa". "La Belle Poule" was cruising at the head of a division including the frigate "La Licorne", the sloop of war "L'Hirondelle" and "Le Coureur" which, after two hours of struggle and a vain attempt of boarding, seized by a dozen charges at the waterline, 3 dead and 7 deadly injured, gave up.

The Knight of Rosily who was given the Saint Louis cross for bis courageous resistance on board of "Le Coureur" came back to France in February 1780. The destiny of "Le Coureur", after being captured by the English, is hardly known. Was it recovered by the French in 1782? There is probably an error of identity in this supposition. Was it captured by the Americans, off Newfoundland, in 1780?

This statement is written by Laird Clowes in his book "The royal navy" and it is furthermore ratified by American studies discussing about a French lugger with a crew of 31 men, which casted anchor in Saint Domingue in 1782.
